When Design Withstands an Earthquake

In Taipei’s lively design district, Mr. Living has become a name for Scandinavian living: calm, honest, and purposeful. Inside one of its showroom zones, a new partition wall quietly shows how the right material can express both beauty and strength, even in a region known for frequent earthquake.

Design Narrative

The space reflects Scandinavian simplicity: open, warm, and balanced. Each line and texture invites visitors into a new area without breaking the sense of flow. Then, a partition acts as both a soft divider and an entry point, guiding movement while letting light and air pass through easily.

The wall uses custom-made ceramic blocks, created to match the brand’s subtle color palette. The matte grey finish gives a calm, tactile look that pairs well with the store’s clean furniture design. While breezeblocks and hollow bricks are often linked to tropical or Asian architecture, this project reimagines them in a Nordic context: simple, composed, and timeless.

Through the Process

In Taiwan, where seismic activity is common, every build must quietly consider stability. During installation, the local team worked with careful precision to ensure perfect alignment.

Not long after completion, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck. When the team returned to inspect the site, the wall stood exactly as before — no cracks, no movement, no sign of damage.

“After the quake, the ceramic blocks stayed exactly the same.”

In Practice

The partition still performs as intended. It divides the space without closing it off, keeps air and light in motion, and adds a quiet texture to the open layout.
