Long before Jakarta’s cafe scene woke up, Monolog Coffee already had its lights on. Since 2011, it’s been the place regulars turn to for an early brunch, well ahead of the city’s usual 10am rush. When the beloved Plaza Senayan spot underwent renovation, the challenge wasn’t just to refresh a well-loved space. It was to give a decade-old legend a look as distinctive as its reputation, and handcrafted tiles became a central part of telling that story.

Design Narrative

Renovating a cafe with this much history comes with a built-in tension: how do you modernize a space without erasing what made people fall in love with it in the first place? Monolog Coffee needed an identity that felt as singular as its early-morning ritual, something that couldn’t be mistaken for just another cafe fit-out.

The answer was to lean into craft. Rather than uniform, mass-produced finishes, the design team built the space around handmade materials, with handcrafted tiles from Mukura at the center of that language: no two tiles are exactly alike, so every surface they cover carries a texture and artistic value that reads as intentional, not manufactured.

The tiles show up across three distinct zones in the cafe, each functioning as a table; bar counters, service counters, and shelving. But each built with its own color and its own module count, so no two areas feel repeated. It’s a subtle but deliberate way of making a large space feel handmade throughout, not just accented in one corner.

Semi-porcelain ceramic gave the design team a material durable enough for high-traffic furniture surfaces, while still being workable enough to produce fully custom, handcrafted modules. The glossy finish adds a dimensional quality to each tile’s texture, catching light differently across the day, fitting for a cafe built around the early-morning hours.

In Use

Step into Monolog Coffee today and the first reaction, according to several content creators, is that it doesn’t feel like Jakarta at all. It feels more like a corner of New York or some other city entirely. A membrane LED lighting installation runs down the center of the cafe, mimicking an open sky. The combination with handcrafted materials create a genuine “wow” moment on arrival, before a single drink is ordered.

Beyond Monolog itself, the project is a reminder of what handcrafted material can do for a space’s identity. Uniformity reads as generic; irregularity, when it’s intentional, reads as artistry. By using tiles where every module is a little different, a space can feel unmistakably its own. It’s a proof that material choice alone can be the difference between “another cafe” and a destination people describe in superlatives.

Through the Process

Handcrafted tiles don’t install the way factory-made ones do. Each module is unique, so laying them takes more skill and attention than a standard, uniform tile job. There’s no repeating template to fall back on. But that extra care is exactly what gives the finished surfaces their artistic value. The result doesn’t read as “tiles” in the utilitarian, bathroom-wall sense. It reads as a crafted surface, built piece by piece for this space alone.
