Celebrating Peranakan Cuisine Through Design

In the heart of Hong Kong, Makan Makan offers more than just a meal. It offers a journey into the vibrant world of Peranakan cuisine. Designed by MAG Studio, the restaurant captures the essence of this cultural fusion through thoughtful interiors, colorful textures, and a cozy dining atmosphere. Every detail feels intentional, blending the nostalgia of heritage with the comfort of modern living.

Design Narrative

The interior design translates the rich layers of Peranakan cuisine into visual form. Bold colors, patterned tiles, and warm lighting echo the lively flavors and intricate recipes that define Peranakan food. At the heart of the space stands an eye-catching island table crafted with Mukura’s Oriental Yellow ceramic blocks.

The vivid yellow glaze and Southeast Asian motif create an immediate focal point. More than that, they form a tactile link between culinary and cultural traditions. The Oriental Yellow finish represents classic Asian craftsmanship, while its glossy surface adds both warmth and depth.

Beyond aesthetics, the ceramic blocks serve a practical purpose. Their smooth, easy-to-clean surface makes them ideal for restaurant use, while their porcelain-grade quality ensures long-term durability. As both a furniture element and a decorative accent, they bring character and texture to the dining experience.

Through materials, the designers tell a story about identity, community, and the timeless appeal of shared culture.

In Practice

The completed space feels warm, layered, and inviting. The Oriental Yellow blocks pair effortlessly with rattan chairs, patterned fabrics, and decorative tiles. Together, these details create an environment that feels both familiar and fresh, just like Peranakan cuisine itself.

Each table becomes more than just furniture; it becomes a celebration of culture and craftsmanship. Makan Makan shows how thoughtful design can elevate the dining experience while honoring the vibrant spirit of Peranakan cuisine.
