Design Narrative

A five-star Four Seasons resort built around Suzhou’s heritage has a lot to live up to. Every material has to earn its place next to centuries of garden design and silk craft. Generic luxury finishes wouldn’t fit here. The team needed something with real handmade character. In other words, something that felt at home next to the resort’s carved screens and lattice windows.

The answer came from Indonesia. Mukura makes ceramic breezeblocks and vent blocks by hand. That handmade process gives each block small, natural variations that machine-made tile can’t match. The result echoes the pierced screen walls found in Suzhou’s own gardens.

Inside the resort, the blocks show up in a smaller, more personal space: several powder rooms. Some use the Victorial block in deep royal blue. Others use Milan in jade green. Both come in the same glossy finish, turning a simple room into a small moment of craft.
