Nostalgia and Calm Wrapped in a Modern Colonial Facade
Roemah Koffie is built around one idea: slowing down. Its name invites guests to take a pause and enjoy their coffee in a cozy vibes, like their own home. This feeling continues through its interior and its colonial facade–inspired exterior, which gives the café a familiar and comforting presence.
Design Narrative
The design draws inspiration from Dutch colonial buildings in Indonesia. These buildings often used wide openings, timber details, and warm tones that suited the tropical climate.
Inside, wooden tables and chairs create a warm, home-like rhythm. Timber-framed windows let soft daylight fill the room. Then, the walls use warm white as a base, with calm green accents placed in small, thoughtful areas. These choices bring a quiet balance between nostalgia and a clean, modern café atmosphere.

The space does not try to copy the past. Instead, it offers a gentle reinterpretation of it, giving guests a sense of memory without feeling old-fashioned.
Material in Focus
To strengthen the look of a modern colonial facade, the café uses Mukura’s Rosentro ceramic blocks in glossy green on the upper part of the exterior.
This detail echoes the decorative ventilation blocks seen in colonial-era architecture. Here, the blocks act as a simple visual accent that links the café to its inspiration. Furthermore, the glossy finish adds a soft sparkle that stands out against the warm white façade.

Through the Process
Adding a patterned upper band helped achieve a façade that felt historical but not heavy. Rosentro’s intertwining design details adds to the romantic aesthetic of this design. Thus, it’s perfect as a reminiscence of colonial Dutch Architecture.
Choosing glossy green connected the façade to tones often seen in heritage shutters. At the same time, the finish added a polished, modern touch. The result is a façade that feels rooted in its context while remaining simple and calm.
In Use
From the street, the ceramic blocks give the café’s colonial facade a clear visual rhythm.
Seen up close, the blocks feel familiar, echoing patterns found in older buildings. At the same time, their clean, modern finish keeps the café fresh and contemporary. This single detail ties together the façade’s timber windows, white base, and green accents.
